FOOD Matters, a documentary about nutrition, health and well-being, produced by Sunshine Coast couple James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch, has just cracked 100,000 sales and is now airing in more than 30 countries.

The film, which was launched 18 months ago, has been shown on French channel Canal Plus, after being dubbed into French for broadcast through 27 countries, as well as the Noga TV network in Israel.

It will premiere on the Rialto Channel in New Zealand next month and has also been included on the in-flight entertainment schedule on Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand flights.

Food Matters, which operates from the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre, is also partnering with other filmmakers to distribute nutrition, well-being and sustainable living films because of the demand for information in the area.

Producer and director James Colquhoun said the couple developed the documentary after watching his father struggle with chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety.

“It was clear the conventional drug-based approach was not working for him, as it doesn’t for many people, and he needed a different angle of attack,” he said.

“We studied all that we could and encouraged him to read many books, but it just wasn’t getting through. That was when we decided to create a film that offered a multi-media learning approach and delivered everything in a quick and concise fashion.

“After watching the footage he started implementing healthier lifestyle changes straight away, and his health rebounded completely and he withdrew from all his other medications without any side effects.

“What we learned throughout this journey was so astounding that we wanted to share it with others, so Food Matters was born.”

The documentary’s website recently recorded more than 95,000 visits in one month. Ms ten Bosch said the film was recently launched into the North American retail market.

Innovation Centre entrepreneur-in-residence Nigel Hall said the success could be just the tip of an iceberg.

“They saw a need, learned new skills and created a product for which there is a strong demand,” Nigel said.

You can find out more about Food Matters including trailer and several interviews here

Synopsis

From writer/director Frank Sabatella comes BLOOD NIGHT: THE LEGEND OF MARY HATCHET, a blood drenched slasher film starring Nate Dushku (The Alphabet Killer, The Zodiac), Bill Moseley (Halloween, Grindhouse, The Devil’s Rejects, The Alphabet Killer), Danielle Harris (Halloween I & II, Super Capers, Hatchet 2) and Samantha Facchi as Mary Hatchet. Audiences are in for a non-stop splatter fest filled with sex, guts, and heads that roll! Blood Night puts a neckbreaking spin on the gory and gut-wrenching “slasher” pieces from the legendary decade of 1980’s horror!

Long Island, 1978: A young girl named Mary Mattock gruesomely murders her family with a hatchet and is locked away for life in Long Island’s notorious Kings Park Psychiatric Center. Ten years later, Mary escapes from the asylum, leaving a grizzly trail of bodies and blood in her wake. Gunned down by the police, Mary meets her own demise outside the sanitarium walls. This incident gave birth to the legend of Mary Hatchet’s walking ghost and the mischievous night named in honor of her death, BLOOD NIGHT!

Stemming from the real life Long Island legend of Mary Hatchet, Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet tells the tale of a group of teenagers enjoying their annual Blood Night festivities, when they come face to face with the reality of this haunting legend. One by one, the teens begin to disappear and meet their fate. As the body count rises, so do the unanswered questions about their missing friends and the secrets of Mary’s horrifying past. Is there more to this legend than the vengeful ghost of Mary Hatchet? And if so, who will survive to tell the terrifying tale?

The Precious One is a biopic based on the true story of South African-born British Olympian and former world champion athlete Precious McKenzie, MBE. Like Nelson Mandela, Precious’ life story ranks right up there beside history’s greatest examples of the human spirit triumphing over immense hardship.

This inspiring drama, which is set predominantly in South Africa during the tumultuous apartheid era, focuses on the struggle for freedom within one of the most oppressive regimes since Nazi Germany.

The Precious One is the ultimate underdog story and a testimony to one man’s indomitable spirit. No matter how bad things get – extreme poverty, violence, racial hatred – Precious McKenzie remains unbreakable.

The Precious One has the potential to be a mainstream crowd-pleaser in the vein of other successful films which dramatise an individual’s triumph over adversity. Movies such as The Pursuit of Happyness, Men of Honor, Slumdog Millionaire and The Blind Side.

The colorful, larger-than-life lead character makes this motion picture totally unique. The story also gains originality from its political setting. Precious McKenzie’s struggle encompasses both the personal and the political, giving it much greater resonance.

Jerry (Jamie Draven) is a Marine reservist who was a young patriot and idealist when he served in the first Gulf War. But when he is called up for deployment to Afghanistan and Iraq, Jerry is a father of three; older and embittered by a life besieged by broken promises, and unfulfilled desires.

Jerry returns a changed man, transformed by horrors committed that go beyond comprehension and sanity, pain inflicted that cannot be forgiven. He lives a life of poverty, his children afraid of his unexplained outbursts of rage, his wife, Nora (Vinessa Shaw), unsympathetic to the nosebleeds and night terrors he suffers. She hides money her sons earn from their paper route in case they need to leave. Their crowded trailer home becomes a prison. His failure as a man, his actions as a soldier, is the punishment which they share. He realizes that the respect and dignity he has spent his life trying to achieve will always elude him.

When Jerry discovers that Nora has betrayed him, his anger and despair drive him to commit an act so heinous and irreversible that nothing he has experienced in combat could have prepared him for.

“Badland” is a gut-wrenching, poignant look at the aftermath of war on a returning Iraq war veteran and his family. It is the story of a man who loses his soul and how a daughter’s love and faith brings redemption to his unspeakable crimes.
